Green I.T.
Green computing or green IT, refers to environmentally sustainable computing or IT. In the article Harnessing Green IT: Principles and Practices, San Murugesan defines the field of green computing as "the study and practice of designing, manufacturing, using, and disposing of computers, servers, and associated subsystems—such as monitors, printers, storage devices, and networking and communications systems—efficiently and effectively with minimal or no impact on the environment."
As well as ensuring you make the right I.T. and business decisions, it is becoming increasingly important to make sure you are aware of what your Company does in relation to the environment. Being able to demonstrate your “Green Credentials” to your customers, suppliers and competitors could play a significant part in your business development. Green I.T. implemented properly will save your company money.

Digital Age can help you cost effectively develop a Green I.T. policy specific to your company as well as help you achieve ISO 14001 Environmental Management certification.
As a guideline, the first three principals in developing a Green I.T. policy are:
- actions aimed at directly reducing the carbon footprint of your I.T. related activities
- using I.T. to help reduce your overall carbon footprint
- actively promoting more environmentally friendly behaviour by your employees, customers and suppliers
The Green I.T. process starts off with an assessment of how "green" you currently are. We will look at all aspects of your existing I.T. operation, including your hardware inventory, power usage, business travel, I.T. strategy etc. At the end of the assessment stage you will be presented with an assessment report. This will detail your current environmental impact and will include recommendations for your Green I.T. strategy. The final stage of the process is to develop a Green I.T. policy which will state your commitment to the environment as well as detail the steps you will take towards a greener I.T. operation.
